Welcome to Klahowya Secondary SchoolKlahowya continues to focus on creating a community of connected learners. Because of the hard work of Green Mountain and Seabeck Elementary Schools, and Klahowya’s dedicated education team, we continue to make substantial gains in the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). Our strand data that documents scores from students who took the fourth-grade WASL and the tenth-grade WASL demonstrate amazing growth. The following table illustrates the dramatic growth provided by the collaboration and professional work of our K-10 staff. It is important to note that the following data compares the same group of students throughout time. We pride ourselves at Klahowya on our ability to consistently, and continually improve student academic performance. The primary reason for our ability to help students achieve their goals is that we are a small campus that builds lasting relationships with our students and our parents. We really get to know all of our students throughout their six years with us. We are able to motivate and encourage our students to persevere in the face of our high expectations because of the relationships that we establish. Our size and our grade configuration enables us to offer individualized programs for our students, so that we can work together to achieve our goals. WASL Growth Rate Percent Meeting Standard 2000 – 2007
In addition to this exceptional growth in WASL scores, Klahowya demonstrates improvement in preparing all students for post-secondary education. Forty-five percent of our ninth and tenth grade students are currently enrolled in challenging honors and pre-advanced placement courses. Fifty-four percent of our tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students are challenging themselves by taking Advanced Placement courses. As a school, we are continually targeting and encouraging our seventh and eighth grade students to develop serious scholarship so that they can take advantage of our plentiful advanced placement offerings. Several students take the initiative to pursue challenging coursework in junior high and in high school so that they are prepared for post-secondary study. Several of our student performers have accepted full scholarships to some of the best schools in the nation, including Stanford University, Annapolis, West Point, The United States Air Force Academy, The Berklee School of Music, and New York University. The graduating classes of 2005 and 2006 earned 1.8 and 1.2 million dollars respectively. We frequently contact our students in college in order to gather data on how we can continue to develop our ability to place students in the college of their choice. We have implemented the new Central Kitsap School District junior high math and science curriculum. Our teachers have committed to several hours of intensive curriculum, instruction, and assessment training. Our students have reported that they enjoy working on the new curriculum and we look forward to continued improvement in our math and science scores. We have witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of students taking advantage of our after hours tutoring program known as Eagle After Hours. Every Monday through Wednesday after school Eagle After Hours students enjoy a quiet place to study with content area specialists Klahowya is extremely proud of our continued academic achievement. We are grateful to our staff, our students, our parents, and our school district for the focused dedication to improved student performance. We are especially proud of our students for working with the school faculty on continuously improving our academic and our extracurricular performance. Our student government team is one of the best groups around. They offer input and help structure all events in Klahowya Secondary School. We offer the full range of athletics and performing arts. Our students consistently earn accolades in both. We encourage all interested parents and students to contact the school administration to arrange a visit to our amazing seventh through twelfth grade campus. Sincerely, Ryan Stevens, Principal
