Distinguished Reader

The Distinguished Reader program (D.R.) is a combined project of the Central Kitsap School District and Kitsap Regional Library to encourage students in grades 6 through 12 to explore, appreciate, and read quality literature.  The program recognizes and rewards students who are independent readers.

In June each school year, Distinguished Reader students are recognized district-wide at the June School Board meeting.

Prior to the District School Board meeting recognition, students are invited to participate in a Distinguished Reader recognition celebration attended by the principal, teachers, parents and librarians.

D.R. Requirements

  • Read 10 books a year

  • When you finish reading a Distinguished Reader book, make an appointment with one of the KSS librarians to discuss your book.

  • Use the Distinguished Reader tracking sheet to record your titles. Librarian will date and initial your tracking sheet after the discussion of the book.  A district-wide file will also be kept for each student.

Book titles may come from one of the recommended reading lists found on the district website:

http://www.cksd.wednet.edu/Programs/DistReader/index.htm

A notebook containing lists of recommended books is available in the KSS library, or you may simply ask a librarian if the book you are reading would qualify as a D. R. book.

Students are encouraged to check out books over the summer and to discuss them with the KSS Librarians when school starts in the fall.

Required novels read for English or other classes will not count toward the D. R. program (e.g. Night, To Kill a Mockingbird).

A book used for an independent book report in any class will qualify for the D. R. program as long as the title is found on the approved list of D. R. novels or with permission by the librarian.
